Japantown Children’s Day Festival ~ San Francisco, May 4 Bring out the kids and friends to enjoy fun games, craft activities, face painting, bounce houses, and cultural and live stage performances for the community to enjoy. Admission is free and open to the public.
El Cerrito Hillside Festival ~ El Cerrito, May 4-5The El Cerrito Trail Trekkers are proud to host the tenth annual El Cerrito Hillside Festival in El Cerrito’s 100-acre gem, the Hillside Natural Area. There’s something for everyone at the festival, including guided, informative hikes about the geology, trees, edible and medicinal plants, birds, lichen, and El Cerrito history. Family-friendly events include a nature scavenger hunt, crafting from nature, art in the trees, and the ever-popular insect hike. People of all ages can learn how to use apps to identify flora and fauna or enter a haiku contest and hear the winners recite their poetry on a haiku hike. Rhonda Benin and Friends at Woodstock Park ~ Alameda, May 18 Rhythmix in the Parks presents an exploration of the question: What is Freedom? Discover the music created by enslaved African Americans expressing their desire and plans for freedom, and how that music helped them survive.
